Help prepare young people with skills for life

Each week, our section volunteers provide over 180 young people with the opportunities to develop skills for life. Many are parents, some have been in Scouts or Guiding themselves.

The truth is, you don’t need to be Bear Grylls. You don’t even need to know how to put up a tent. Volunteering with Scouts is great for young people, and it’s good for you too.

As a member of our leader team, you’ll work with other leaders in your section to plan and deliver an exciting programme, making sure everyone’s safe, supported, and having fun.

Our leader teams share responsibilities including planning programmes, handling money, communicating with parents, and managing badge stocks. There’s something for everyone.

Nobody’s expected to do everything right away. We’ll provide you with training and support to ease your transition into the role.

Key responsibilities

There’s something for everyone at Scouts. As a section team, there are a number of responsibilities to be shared out.
Our teams work closely together, and will be keen to hear what tasks you’d be most comfortable to get stuck in with.

These are the main tasks that new members of the team will have:

  • Running games and activities as part of weekly section meetings and other section events.
  • Assisting young people to achieve badges and awards.
  • Assisting with residential experiences for the section.
  • Assisting the section with taking part in a varied, exciting and safe programme of activities.

The benefits go both ways!

Volunteering can be a brilliant way to boost your mental wellbeing. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life, and you might even learn a lot about yourself along the way.

You don’t need to have ever been a scout before – and there’s no “right” way to volunteer.
We promote flexible volunteering. Your time and skills can make a difference in so many ways.

Our entire group is run by volunteers who join us because they want to:

  • Try something new
  • Make friends
  • Spend time with their children – or gain experience with young people
  • Do something good for their community and themselves
  • Keep their bodies and brains active and happy – whether that’s by scaling mountains, sharing skills on our trustee board

Support at every step of the way

Volunteers are the heart of the Scouts and we want you to get every bit as much out of it as you put in. Our Group Scout Leader team and existing members of your section team are there to support you as you get stuck in, and will continue to check in during your time volunteering with us.

In the first few months of your role, you’ll complete e-learning modules (whenever it suits you best) that’ll bring you up to speed on the fundamentals of scouting, safety, safeguarding, and an introduction to volunteering as a leader.

Express interest by leaving your details below

Thank you for expressing interest in joining our leader team at the 28th.

By leaving your details, you’re not committing to volunteering. We’ll make sure to have an informal chat about what the role contains and answer any questions you may have before taking it any further.
