As we approach the end of 2024, we’d like to express our gratitude to a few of our dedicated volunteers who will be stepping down from their roles at the end of the term.

Derek (Scouts Team Leader & Trustee)
Since joining the 28th volunteer team in 2014 as a parent helper on our Executive Committee (now Trustee Board), Derek has supported the group in a whole host of ways, taking on multiple roles that have enabled young people to take part in the scouting programme.

Initially serving as Group Treasurer, Derek became Section Leader of Wednesday Cubs in September 2015, later stepping into the role of Scouts Section Leader in January 2023. Over the years, Derek has organised and delivered hundreds of meetings and several nights away events, enabling young people in Giffnock to earn many badges and develop valuable skills

Beyond his leadership of the Cubs and Scouts sections, Derek has been instrumental in organising community events, including our Jumble Sales, Nearly New & Book Sales, and weekly litter picks in partnership with Orchardhill’s Black Door Shop. In 2023 Derek was awarded the Chief Scout’s Commendation for Good Service in recognition of the significant contribution that he has made to the 28th over many years.

Andy (Explorers Team Leader)
Better known to young people and leaders alike as ‘Lawson’, Andy started volunteering with the 28th as an adult in September 2015 after previously moving through the group himself as a young person and young leader. In 2022, Andy stepped up as Team Leader for the section.

Volunteering with the Explorer section for the duration of this period, Andy has played a key role in designing and delivering years worth of fun, engaging, and creative activities for young people aged 14-17. From “man vs sandwich” to exam de-stressers, Andy has overseen a high quality programme for young people at a key age in young people’s lives. In addition to planning and running evenings in the hall, Andy has made many nights away events possible, helping other sections and groups when required, and even supporting young people on mystery trips abroad!
Andy will continue to be involved with Scouts, principally through his role on the Eastwood District 14-24 team.

Graham (Scouts Team Member)
After progressing through the sections himself and volunteering in the troop as a young leader, Graham started volunteering with the Scouts section as an adult in 2018. Beyond supporting the troop, Graham has enthusiastically contributed to the wider group, helping out at camps, activities with other sections, and fundraising events.
Although taking a step back from weekly Scout meetings, Graham will be keeping up-to-date with the Group’s activities and will be on hand to help support events in the future.

Thank you to Derek, Andy, and Graham for all you’ve done for the 28th, and for young people in Giffnock. We wish you all the best for the future, and look forward to staying in touch!

We’re pleased to share that Fhi and Donald will be stepping into the roles of Scouts and Explorers Team Leaders respectively.
